In September 1962, the aircraft designating systemsof the USAF and Navy were combined.
This had relatively littleeffect on existing USAF designations but caused abandonment of manylong-standing Navy designations.
After the change, the specialpurpose was identified by a prefix, with the WV-2Q becoming theEC-121N.
US Air Force EC-121Rs were former Navy WV-2/EC-121Ksstripped of their radomes, camouflaged, and used for specialelectronic missions in Vietnam.
